Mariana prides herself on having been born and raised in Dunn, North Carolina, a small town with strong roots in family and community. Although Mariana now calls Raleigh home, her family still resides in Dunn, and she greatly enjoys returning home to visit. Mariana attended college at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she graduated with honors. Following graduation, Mariana worked in broadcast journalism. Feeling that she had other passions to pursue, Mariana made the decision to obtain her law degree at the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University.
While in law school, Mariana gained valuable experience and found great success as a member of the National Civil Rights Moot Court team and a member of the National Moot Court team, which won first place honors and Best Brief. Because of her skill and dedication, in 2008 Mariana was inducted into the Order of Barristers, an honor for those who exhibit excellence and attain high honor through the art of courtroom advocacy. Mariana enjoyed her experience at Campbell so much that she continues to volunteer with the law school’s advocacy programs. Mariana has always focused on family law and litigation, and prior to joining Barefoot Family Law, Mariana worked for the family law section at Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton, LLP, one of the twenty largest law firms in North Carolina. Mariana is a North Carolina Board Certified Family Law Specialist and handles all aspects of family law litigation, including mediation, equitable distribution, child custody and support matters, postseparation support and alimony, premarital agreements, separation agreements and divorce.
Mariana also stays active as a member of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and has presented the case law update at the Family Law Section’s annual Continuing Legal Education meeting. When not practicing law, Mariana spends time with her husband, Jeff, who is also an attorney.
Connell, Michelle D.
Michelle has been practicing in the area of family law for over 25 years. While her practice focuses solely on family law, she appears in both District Court and in the North Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of North Carolina. She is one of only three attorneys in the state who is a Board Certified Specialist in both the areas of Family Law and Appellate Law. On the trial court level, Michelle has a tremendous amount of experience in litigating all actions of family law including complex equitable distribution, alimony and post-separation support, child custody and child support, and civil domestic violence She has prosecuted and defended actions for alienation of affections and criminal conversation. On the appellate court level, Michelle’s practice involves handling all aspects of appeals in the Supreme Court of North Carolina and North Carolina Court of Appeals.
Since 1999, she has presented written and oral arguments in cases involving the full range of family law and contract issues. She handles appeals from all counties in North Carolina. Michelle regularly lectures at Continuing Legal Education seminars in the areas of Family and Appellate Law. The purpose of this Council is to draft legislation and improve the practice of family law in the State. This Committee is tasked with drafting rules of Court for North Carolina appellate courts.
Fellows in the AAML must have practiced a minimum of 10 years at a high level in the area of family law as well as held leadership positions in state family law organizations. They are vetted for membership through the National AAML. Michelle graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in English and BA in Psychology.

She was an Associate with the family law firm of Donna Ambler Davis in Chapel Hill before she established her own family law practice in May, 2008. Barbara works to establish strong, positive relationships with her clients and helps them navigate the emotional upheavals of divorce, achieve financial stability, and reduce the stress that divorce places on children. Whether in negotiation or litigation, she is a tough and determined advocate working to protect the best interests of her clients. In 2013, she completed training as a collaborative family law attorney as well as training for Guardian Ad Litem and Parenting Coordinator for the Triangle.
